Rather than leave Bollington today, Edwina kindly offers to look after the girls and leave Tony and Clare to head to York alone. The girls are pleased to have more time with their cousins and Tony and Clare get to visit York and see a little of what Alice has told them so much about. They head off armed with information sent ahead by Alice. They opt to use the park and ride.
First stop in the city is Cliffords Tower. Free for NZ Historic Places Trust members. Interesting history here. Once a significant city stronghold. We follow on from here using a city walk guide which shows many of the interesting sites including the old guildhall, the shambles - the quaint ramshackle street initially home for city butchers and of course the city wall. We enjoy a walk around the top looking towards the famous York Minster.
Exhausted we stop for coffee and hot chocolate. It was to be at Bettys tea house but the queues are not to our liking. We take the recommendation of a waitress and head for Wildes and dinner out.
Our plans to catch the bus back to the park and ride fail when we discover we are two hours too late for the last bus. Instead it is a 50 min walk which is actually quite pleasant. It's been another great day out.
