June 14: The Somme Valley

We start south on our journey to meet Kay and Malcolm. The sat nav tells us that the trip to Giverney should take around four hours. At this point we are able to confirm that it does not take four hours.
Initially we had planned to cross from higher in the UK to Holland, then make our way to meet Kay and Malcolm near Caen. However, at the time when we were booking the ferry there was a plan change mouted and we were intending to head higher up to Calais. We decided then that it was hard to justify the cost of crossing directly into Holland with the motorhome... 395 pounds... compared to the Dover to Calais option at 40. By midday today we were already questioning our decision. The trip down to Caen is ends up being a huge two days for us all.
We selected the non-toll roads which does make for a longer trip. We passed by lovely sights. Endless fields of crops. Countless poppies spread over sombre fields made famous for all the wrong reasons. We stop at a few memorials including one at Bulnecourt but we are still driving at 7pm when we realise we need fuel. All is very quiet on a Saturday night and so we drive back and forth between villages searching for one. Finally we find one, fill up and then pull into a quiet spot by the road to cook dinner. We consider staying the night but elect to move to an aire de camping at a local farm. The six euros is well spent and we have a great rest ready for another huge day tomorrow. We are still about an hour and a half away from our intended destination of Giverney.
