Today ends up being the longest day we have had for a long time. We are woken at 6am, not that we had a great sleep anyway. There was a fair rock on that boat. We've had breakfast and are driving off the boat by 7am. We are both surprised to find that the van had not moved in the night. There was a lot of movement in the boat and it was a bit like worrying you have left the iron on... We were awake a lot of the night imagining all sorts of scenarios. Did we put the hand break on? Would it be enough to hold it?
It's early but we drive to the only campsite in Dubrovnic, deciding that it is overpriced with little advantage to others just out of town. We soak up views of the old city as we drive over mountains to visit the beaches to the south of the city. We end up at Kupari which has lovely shade and is close to beaches. It is very run down, much like it's sister beach with hotels 500m away. Both were caught up in the war of the 1990s and being Government owned there is not enough money to fix everything up at once... And so they are caught up waiting for decisions to be made.
We head for Srebreno beach and are amazed at the clear, warm water with such lovely colours. The girls get to try their masks and snorkels and get to see lots of little fish.
We grab a bite then take a bus into Dubrovnic for the afternoon. The bus is heaving with people and the girls are already tired. We walk down into the old city, now repaired since the war of 1990-95. This is a city with piles of history, including that of earthquakes. Ironically the oldest building, St Saviours church, was built to commemorate victims of the 1520 earthquake. No others stood after the quake of 1665.
