August 19: Venice

The morning starts with rain and so we cruise at the campground for a bit until it does clear and we make the decision to grab a bus and head into the city. We take on the walk into St Marks Square via the maze of narrow streets and bridges. Of course as we approach the crowds get denser. It's quite something to then watch an enormous cruise ship sail right past the square on it's way to dock... and then to realise all those people will soon be mixing in these streets too. We quickly turn to follow the path back to the bus, stopping for a quick gondola ride on the way. It is a magic place but it is hard to take it in with so many people swarming.
As we arrive back to the van the rain starts again. We depart Venice on our way north to the mountains. We end up in a camping ground under the towering Dolomite montains of Cortina. It is rather cold tonight. Would be so nice to ski in this beautiful place.
