Our stay is on an hourly rate here so we decide to grab a swim in the sea and eat breakfast somewhere on the road. The sea is very warm. The beach sandy. We pay our €19 then drive past a lagoon onto Promontorio dell'Argentario. It's almost an island and it is a lovely drive around the edge past Porto Sto Stefano. We find a lovely spot to eat breakfast and watch yachts, fishing boats, super yachts and ferrys in the sea below. We watch dark clouds approach and so it is no surprise when the heavens open and rain piles down when when we are driving back towards the mainland. The thunder and lightening are pretty close to us.
We grab a few supplies from the next town of Orbetello before heading off on an epic drive. We set up shop on the side of the road for a lovely lunch of bruscetta, tomato, olive oil, mozzerella, salt, basil, melon and proscuttio.
We leave Tuscany and drive further south from the large port Civitavecchia. We are still on the 'b' roads and we stop to swim in the med near Severa. It's gorgeous. The stones on the shore are an incredible mix of vibrant colours with lines and patterns.
We don't want to push things so we drive right on past Rome. It seems a shame but we have a deadline with a boat to catch on the other side of Italy in a couple of days. We go for the 'a' roads and pay about €6 to drive around the city and on toward the East. Somewhat randomly we elect to stay in Cassino, the town made famous in New Zealand for the terrible battle fought here that lasted too long and cost too many lives.
We find ourselves in a rather run down camping ground that breeds great mosquitoes. A stream fed by natural springs runs alongside. We leave our exploring til the morning.
