April 19: We are in the USA

Breakfast at the Cortona has to be seen to believed. No photo would do it justice. Fluorescent coloured 'cereal' is on offer to start you off, with/options like waffles with gallons of high 'maple' syrup (laced with high fructose corn syrup), choc dipped doughnuts, danish pastries, and DIY hamburger muffins with processed patties and artificial egg circles to follow. All was presented on polystyrene plates, cups and plastic cutlery. This probably shaped our perceptions of the diet and lifestyle here, but over the time we were here it did seem difficult to access unprocessed whole food. We found everything sweeter - even yoghurt and bread. Fizzy drinks the norm... water clearly not the standard option. Outside the areas with tourist hotels we noticed few if any pedestrians. Obviously Anaheim is a resort town so maybe this had an impact on things.

Breakfast over we took a trip shopping to a gorgeous outdoor mall. We asked where an outlet store was for the sketchers lightups we wanted to get for the girls and then embarked in an huge walk in the hot sun down a deserted pavement. We walked for maybe an hour and a half and passed only one person. Might I say that the girls were thankful the we chose to bring the stroller and they did not have to walk all that way. At this point we relented and took a cab the rest of the way to our destination. After a spot of grocery shopping to stock up on snacks for our trips to Disneyland we had exhausted our first day in LA. Subway then bed for one and all ready for a big Disney day tomorrow.
