June 22: To Concarneau

Fabulous day. We take a walk beside the small lake and onto the forest around Huelgoat. Huge rounded boulders are littered along the path of a now underground river. It's something very diffent to other parts of Brittany that we have seen.
We wander up to the village square and catch the last 5 mins of the church service. It's lovely to meet some locals before wandering to buy our daily baguette from the boulangerie. Tony spies a fish shop and we get to buy oysters and also take some sea snails to try. They've been cooked already so we are set to take our picnic beside the lake shores. Fabulous. Everyone gets to try the sea snails.... Some manage to get past the mouth while others spit them out in horror.
The road takeas us fom here to Pleyben. This gorgeous village has elaborate decorative statues typical of the area. Each village used to try and outdo each other with their display. We might not have stopped had we not seen the woman in traditional dress wander through the churchyard. We follow her path ad come across a host of children in various examples of their regional costume. It is a dance competition today. We stay for a short time then drive on to Concarneau. This is the hottest day we have encountered thus far. Thirty degrees feels very hot. We drive past the unshaded aire in a municipal car park find the perfect spot under large trees.
After a cheeky predinner drink we walk along the atlantic coastline outside the camping ground and on to a point where we take a ferry across the harbour into the old city. This is a completely enclosed old town. We stop and have dinner. Some have the local specialty of grilled sardines, others a whole fish cooked according to a local recipee. Throw in a few scallops and we feel we have really had the chance to sample the local fare today.
